Public encouraged to comment on the road closures in Athlone

03 July 2026

The City of Cape Town is calling on residents to submit their comments on the proposed road closures of Klipfontein Service Road and East Street in Athlone by 3 August 2026. The proposal aims to improve road safety and traffic flow in the area.

The road closure along Klipfontein Service Road will be between Thornton and Eagle Street and the closure along East Street between Klipfontein Service Road and South Avenue.

City officials will be hosting an information session at the Gleemoor Baptist Church Hall, 38 Simon’s Road in Sunnyside, Athlone on Wednesday, 22 July 2022 from 15:00 until 19:00 where residents will have direct access to the relevant City officials for further insight on the proposals.

‘The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has recommended that the section of Klipfontein Service Road between Thornton Road and Eagle Road be closed off permanently to discourage rat running along Klipfontein Service. These changes in traffic operations are primarily to improve the traffic safety and free up flow at the Thornton Road, Klipfontein Service Road and North Link Road intersection. Planning and network management proposals such as these all contribute to our efforts to keep Cape Town moving.

‘In addition to the closure of Klipfontein Service Road between Thornton Road and Eagle Road, the team has proposed the closure of East Street to discourage the transference of unnecessary traffic to South Avenue. We really encourage residents to submit their comments before 3 August 2026 for consideration,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
